Education in Zion is a new multimedia exhibition occupying the beautiful gallery space in the Joseph F. Smith Building at Brigham Young University.

This permanent exhibition explores a tradition of learning that aims to educate the whole soul and documents the rich history and heritage of education in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from the revelations of the prophet Joseph Smith to the current worldwide Church Educational System.

Education in Zion includes inspiring stories shared through film, artwork, photographs and letters thoughtfully displayed in the open gallery space with several conversation areas that offer visitors a stunning view of the Wasatch Mountains.

Hours

Education in Zion is open Monday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The gallery is closed during campus devotionals and forums.

Location

Education in Zion is located in the gallery on the second floor of the Joseph F. Smith Building at Brigham Young University.

Plan Your Visit

Admission: Admission is free.

Coat Check: To insure the safety of all items within the exhibition, visitors may not carry bags while touring the gallery. All bags, backpacks, and umbrellas must be checked in at the information desk. Students or other visitors who would like to take notes on the exhibition are welcome to carry a notebook.

Food and Drink: No food or drink is allowed in the exhibition.

Parking and Directions: The Joseph F. Smith Building is on West Campus Drive at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah 84602. The Joseph F. Smith Building is situated just west of the Harold B. Lee Library and the Wilkinson Student Center, and south of the Talmage Building and N. Eldon Tanner Building.

BYU Visitor parking is located on North Campus Drive in front of the Museum of Art, and across the street from the Wilkinson Student Center. Parking is free.

Accessibility: Education in Zion is accessible to wheelchair users. The main floor of the Joseph F. Smith Building is at street level and there are five available elevators.

Family Night at the Museum: BYU history comes alive!

November 9 - Step into the past with our gallery educators and learn about early organizations of the Church from significant people in Church History.

November 16 - Learn about the School of the Elders and the expansion of the Book of Mormon around the globe. Step into the past with our gallery educators posed as Parley P. Pratt and other significant historical figures in the Church.

Family Home Evening at Education in Zion provides a meaningful, uplifting experience for families and friends to learn about education in the Church and at Brigham Young University.

Programs start every 30 minutes, beginning at 7:00 pm. The gallery closes at 9 pm that evening. To sign-up for a Family Home Evening program, please call the Information Desk at (801) 422-6519. Drop-ins are also welcome.

A handful of BYU studio art students from Sunny Belliston Taylor's advanced studio course respond to the Education in Zion exhibition, and through personal and collaborative artworks, share their creative interpretations of a faith-centered education and the concepts of light, truth, and spirit.

"Amazing Grace" Date Night at Education in Zion

In the spirit of Thanksgiving for the freedoms we enjoy, Education in Zion is hosting a special date night, showing the award-winning movie "Amazing Grace." This inspiring film is based upon the life of Parliament member William Wilberforce, who dedicated his life to abolishing slavery in the British Empire.

Amazing Grace Youssou N'Dour as Oloudah Equiano and Ioan Gruffudd as William Wilberforce in Roadside Attractions and Samuel Goldwyn Films' "Amazing Grace."

We invite you and your date to begin the evening in the Education in Zion gallery at the Joseph F. Smith Building at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21. Visit the exhibition before the film screening and read the stories of our educational heritage that fill the exhibition's walls.

At 7:30 p.m. guests will be guided down the gallery's beautiful spiral staircase to the Education in Zion theater, B-192 JFSB, to watch "Amazing Grace." Refreshments will follow the film screening.
